Middle School

The Austin Prep Middle School Program (Grades 6-8) sets the context and climate for learning. Our course of study develops the maximum individual and social learning. All students take six subjects per year: Theology, English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, and Latin. (Students in grade 8 choose from Latin, French, Russian, and Spanish.)

Students are grouped by ability in Latin and Mathematics. They are heterogeneously grouped in the other four areas. This combination of grouping not only allows for ability clustering in those subjects that necessitate it, but also capitalizes achievements in all subjects by mixing the ability levels where the subject matter is more diverse. It also allows for the development of social skills and avoids labeling students.Students are placed according to teacher recommendations and standardized testing. Our goal is to maximize learning and to create the most intellectual and social growth.

The Middle School program develops study skills appropriate to the diverse curriculum. Students are encouraged to grow through the understanding of information and mastery of skills. We guide a young person through the often challenging and daunting transition from elementary school to high school. In this process our program anchors, challenges, and rewards the students’ efforts and achievements and prepares them fully for the secondary school experience.
